The Enabling Sport Foundation, (ESF), is
a non-profit organization providing a safe and unique sporting
activity to people with disabilities. Our mission is to open
a whole new world of recreational challenges and enjoyment thereby
creating the sense of independence and self-esteem necessary
for all of us. Research indicates that ESF is the ONLY group
of its kind in the country.

Problem: Limited activities for people
with disabilities
Physical activity and exercise are vital
to maintain a healthy lifestyle. Recreational activities are
often not available, accessible or affordable for people with
disabilities and their families. Therefore, individuals with
physical and developmental disabilities are frequently segregated
from others in their community. Adaptations have been made to
some activities such as skiing, but, many people with disabilities
still require assistance. They never enjoy the exhilaration and
satisfaction of individual, independent participation and achievement.
Solution: A Safe Sporting Activity Enabling
Independence
ESF has created a specialized vehicle called
Railrider which provides the opportunity
to experience freedom and mobility to everyone, including those
of us with significant disabilities. Railriding is a variation
of bicycle riding without the inherent dangers.
There are over 50,000 miles of abandoned
railroad track in the United States alone. It is the intent of
ESF to assist in the development of selected portions into rail
parks. A great many tracks run through forested or scenic areas,
so that parks will have both a recreational and educational focus.
They will include picnic areas, conservation presentations, fauna
information, things to be touched and smelled and wildlife to
be seen and heard. The ride, the changing seasons and the amenities
of the park will provide year-round enjoyment for everyone.
ESF Credentials Development, Certification
and Support
ESF addresses the need for recreation and
leisure, education, socialization and integration in a fun and
relaxed family atmosphere. It is ESF's intent to remain privately
organized and funded, community based and controlled.
We have taken the proper steps to utilize
the assets around us, develop the situation, test it, and expand
the idea into an operating reality. With the support of many
we have effectively developed the program, built the necessary
equipment and structured the organization into a 501(c)3 non-profit
corporation. Support comes from so many; from federal to local
representatives, various professionals, clubs, associations,
mechanics, welders and machine shops. We have received only enthusiastic
feedback from all who have tried railriding during our testing
period. Come join us and spread the word about the Railrider
- freedom and mobility for all!
