Fryeburg, Maine
Bob and I started our ride on a beautiful sunny day with dark
clouds looming on the horizon. We put our RailANT on track at
the tourist visitor center at Rt. 302 in Fryeburg, Maine.
The ladies at the visitor center were very
nice and asked us about railriding.
We let them experience first-hand what railriding
is about. Just look at their faces!

This route goes for 50 miles ending in Portland, Maine. We went
only half-way on this route due to stopping frequently to enjoy
scenery. There was a bright yellow caboose near the track that
marked where a hobbyist had set up displays of different gauge
model railroads in his large building. Unfortunately, this day
we could only gaze at these jewels inside, but on our next trip
plan to visit when it's open.
At the mile 6 marker was a rusty bridge crossing the most completely
sandy-bottomed river I've ever encountered.

We immediately stopped, removed our shoes
and cooled off. We returned to the railbike and rode on to stop
again at a shady swamp area where snapping turtles thrive.
Riding along further we saw a plane landing, which I recognized
to be a Cessna 172- 4 seater. We decided to stop at this small,
local airport to see more planes, and reminisce about my former
days of flying when I was a pilot. This is where we met two mechanics
who expressed an interest in our vehicle. After sharing some
cold soft drinks from the hangar fridge, they joined us at the
tracks and took a ride together.
We stopped next in the town of West Baldwin and found a nice
gas station/deli, where we met more interesting people.
A local Native American, Whitehorse, made
us homemade tuna sandwiches. We told her what we were traveling
on the rails on our 4 wheeled railrider. When we let her try
riding, she enjoyed it and said, "This was a lot of fun
but I like my horse better."
This is one of the best advantages of railriding; visiting small
towns and meeting local folk along the tracks.
In order to use this track permission is needed. Contact
